Wow, Johnny Lee is ingenious!

No life expectancy. Just live!

The graduating class of 2008 from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information had Adrian Tan, a litigation lawyer, as Guest-of-Honour for their convocation ceremony.

His friend, the insightful mrwang, posted the humourous speech on his blog. Drop your course materials and read it here!

  1. Don’t work.
  2. Avoid telling the truth.
  3. Be hated.
  4. Love someone.

I understood #1 during my NS days, realised the use/danger of #2 this year, am learning to become #3, and searching for #4. haha!

The Glorious Age

Posted in Leadership on August 5, 2008 by ahchen

As the world celebrates Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday (18th July), TIME magazine featured an excellent story on 8 lessons of leadership, based on the great man’s tumultuous life (read the physical copy at yeehung’s place after emo-supper).

  1. Courage is not the absence of fear—it’s inspiring others to move beyond it
  2. Lead from the front—but don’t leave your base behind
  3. Lead from the back — and let others believe they are in front
  4. Know your enemy—and learn about his favorite sport
  5. Keep your friends close—and your rivals even closer
  6. Appearances matter—and remember to smile
  7. Nothing is black or white
  8. Quitting is leading too

Do spend some time to read the entire text here.

In praise of his spirited fight in paving a way to freedom and peace, Wong Ka Kui (lead singer of Beyond) dedicated a song in the late 80′s to the first black president of South Africa.

Enjoy “光辉岁月”!

A Transformational Professor

Posted in Life on June 1, 2008 by ahchen

Dr. Randy Pausch (NTUSIFEers, expecting someone else? haha!), a computer science professor from Carnegie Mellon University, has inspired millions with his famous “The Last Lecture” by talking about how he achieved his childhood dreams and sharing his life lessons.

In 2006, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. By August last year, the cancer had spread to other internal organs and he was given a survival prognosis of 3–6 months.

A role model of humility and humour, I’m touched by his love for his family and inspired by his positive outlook and attitude of not taking anything in life for granted.

A graduation speech about Passion & Soulmate:

A 1-hour special on ABC:

My favourite excerpt from “The Last Lecture”:

“The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.”

李开复写给中国学生的信

Posted in Career, Life on May 29, 2008 by ahchen
